In 2016 the International Olympic committee ruled that transgender athletes can compete in the Olympics without undergoing sex reassignment surgery. Yes, transgender people should be allowed to compete in their gender category like anyone else. Discretion should be taken on a case-by-case basis for professional athletes only, with an assessment of suitable hormone levels. This should not be required for any non-professional sports as access to safe and respectful social physical activity should not be restricted on the basis of gender identity and sex.
