Well, its not just the children making these decisions, it is made between the child, their parents and their doctor after several years of councillin.

Australia currently operates on the "informed consent" model - ie, no diagnosis, no gatekeeping. This is presented as a good thing in the official materials:

Children cannot consent to tattoos, sex and other serious decisions. They also cannot drive, drink, smoke, vote or take drugs under the law.

Not all gender transition treatments are completely irreversible, at least in the sense that irreversible means there are markable side effect that remains when reversed.
