The East West Link is a proposed 18-kilometer cross-city toll road connecting the Eastern Freeway to CityLink. The project is arguably the most controversial infrastructure zombie in Victorian history; the previous Liberal government signed contracts to build it just before the 2014 election, only for the incoming Labor government to cancel them at a cost of $1.1 billion to taxpayers. With population booming and the West Gate Bridge often gridlocked, the project remains a key dividing line in Melbourne politics. Proponents argue it is a critical second river crossing needed to transport freight and reduce travel times across the city. Opponents argue the money would be better spent on public transport and that the tunnel is an outdated, expensive solution that will only encourage more car dependency.
