Coogee Beach reopened on Monday morning with jet ski patrols and constant drone surveillance after a 35-year-old woman was mauled by a large shark on Saturday.
The victim remains in critical condition after being bitten in waist-deep water by what is believed to be an 11-foot Great White. An off-duty lifeguard on a paddleboard rescued the victim from a pool of blood while the shark was still circling the area. Following the attack, the New South Wales government immediately lifted a local drone ban to allow rescuers to track marine life from the air.
This incident has reignited a fierce national debate over whether to reinstate shark nets or implement a controversial shark cull to protect swimmers.
