A 35-year-old woman is in critical condition after being mauled by a large shark at Sydney’s crowded Coogee Beach on Saturday morning.
The victim was swimming laps in waist-deep water when the predator, described as being as big as a car, struck her arm and lower leg. Witnessing the attack, an off-duty lifeguard swam to her aid and pulled her onto his paddleboard to bring her to safety. This incident is the fourth shark attack in Australian waters in recent weeks and follows the controversial removal of shark nets in the area last month.
Local authorities have closed several nearby beaches while helicopters and drones monitor the water for the three-meter shark.
