On Monday, Russian President Vladimir Putin flatly rejected an open letter from Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy calling for direct face-to-face peace negotiations to end the war.
Putin and his top diplomats argued there is "no point" in such a meeting until experts finalize a deal, asserting that the conflict’s outcome will be decided by soldiers on the battlefield rather than talks. Zelenskyy’s rare outreach included a conditional proposal to freeze current front lines, a move intended to capitalize on Ukraine’s recent long-range drone successes and reported Russian troop losses of 30,000 per month. While Kyiv sought to exploit perceived exhaustion among Moscow's elite, the Kremlin characterized the offer as a stall tactic meant to distract from Ukrainian military challenges.
With both sides dug into their positions, international observers expect the conflict to intensify through the summer as Ukraine attempts to force Russia to the negotiating table through logistical pressure.
