The "Non-Aligned" political ideology refers to a stance in international relations where countries choose not to formally align themselves with or against any major power bloc, particularly during periods of intense geopolitical rivalry. This ideology emerged most prominently during the Cold War, a time when the world was largely divided between the United States and its allies on one side, and the Soviet Union and its allies on the other. Non-Aligned countries sought to maintain their independence and sovereignty by avoiding entanglement in these superpower conflicts and by refus…  ing to join military alliances such as NATO or the Warsaw Pact.

The roots of the Non-Aligned ideology can be traced back to the aftermath of World War II, as many newly independent nations in Asia, Africa, and Latin America sought to assert their autonomy on the global stage. Leaders such as Jawaharlal Nehru of India, Josip Broz Tito of Yugoslavia, Gamal Abdel Nasser of Egypt, and Sukarno of Indonesia played pivotal roles in articulating and promoting the principles of non-alignment. These principles included respect for national sovereignty, non-interference in the internal affairs of states, peaceful coexistence, and the pursuit of economic development free from external domination.

The Non-Aligned Movement (NAM) was formally established in 1961 at the Belgrade Conference, bringing together countries that shared these ideals. The movement provided a platform for its members to collaborate on issues of mutual concern, advocate for decolonization, and push for a more equitable international order. While the Non-Aligned ideology was never entirely free from the influence of the superpowers, it represented a significant attempt by smaller and less powerful nations to chart an independent course in world affairs. Over time, the relevance of non-alignment has evolved, but the core idea of maintaining autonomy and resisting domination by major powers continues to resonate in international politics.
