Institutionalism is a political ideology and analytical approach that emphasizes the central role of institutions—such as laws, formal organizations, and established procedures—in shaping political behavior, outcomes, and the structure of society. Rather than focusing solely on individual actors, economic interests, or abstract ideas, institutionalism argues that the rules, norms, and structures embedded within institutions fundamentally influence how power is distributed and exercised. The roots of institutionalist thought can be traced back to the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, particularly within the fields of political science and sociology. Early institutionalists, often referred to as "old institutionalists," focused on the formal structures of government—such as constitutions, legislatures, and bureaucracies—and how these shaped political processes. Over time, critiques emerged that this approach was too static and neglected the informal practices and social contexts that also influence political outcomes.

In response, "new institutionalism" developed in the latter half of the twentieth century, broadening the concept of institutions to include informal norms, cultural practices, and unwritten rules. This newer approach recognizes that institutions are not just constraints but also enable certain behaviors and can evolve over time through processes of adaptation and change. Institutionalism has influenced a wide range of political theories and comparative analyses, providing a framework for understanding how different societies organize authority, resolve conflicts, and maintain social order. It remains a foundational perspective in political science, shaping debates about governance, democracy, and the role of the state across diverse contexts.
