A rare and deadly outbreak of the Andes strain of hantavirus has struck the MV Hondius cruise ship, resulting in at least eight confirmed cases and three deaths among passengers and crew.
The ship, carrying nearly 150 people, is heading to Tenerife in Spain's Canary Islands, where authorities are preparing for a carefully managed evacuation and quarantine. Health officials, including the World Health Organization (WHO) and the CDC, emphasize that while the outbreak is serious, the risk to the general public remains low and the virus is not as easily transmissible as COVID-19. Several countries, including the US and UK, are monitoring and quarantining returning citizens, and contact tracing is underway to prevent further spread.
The incident has reignited concerns about global pandemic preparedness and the unique risks posed by cruise ships for infectious disease outbreaks.
