Ukraine and Russia have returned to the negotiating table in Istanbul for the first time in nearly two months, but hopes for a breakthrough remain low.
While both sides agreed to further prisoner swaps, there was little progress on a ceasefire or a leaders' summit, despite Ukraine's proposal for a high-level meeting involving Zelensky, Putin, Trump, and Erdogan. President Trump's threats of new sanctions on Russia have not moved the parties closer to peace, and the Kremlin insists its war objectives must be met before any settlement. Civilian casualties in Ukraine continue to mount as talks stall, and both sides remain deeply divided on the terms for ending the conflict.
The international community is watching closely, but a resolution appears distant.
