A sweeping global study has found that giving children smartphones before age 13 is strongly associated with poorer mental health outcomes later in life.
Researchers surveyed nearly 2 million people across more than 160 countries and found early smartphone ownership increases risks of depression, suicidal thoughts, aggression, low self-worth, and behavioral issues—especially among girls. The study highlights that early exposure to social media and excessive screen time can disrupt sleep, emotional regulation, and social development. Experts are urging parents to delay giving smartphones to children and to limit screen time for young kids.
The findings have sparked calls for policy changes and greater parental awareness to protect children's mental well-being.
