Owen Fitzgerald, a 19-year-old Greens candidate for the federal seat of Franklin in Tasmania, has withdrawn from the race after discovering he holds New Zealand citizenship through his father.
The dual citizenship makes him ineligible to run for federal office under Australia's constitution. Fitzgerald, who was seen as a future leader of the Greens and had strong backing from former party leader Bob Brown, called the situation a 'disappointing but temporary setback'. He has expressed intentions to return to politics once the issue is resolved.
The incident highlights ongoing challenges with Australia's strict constitutional rules on dual citizenship for federal candidates.

Ugh, this outdated dual citizenship rule really needs to go—it's ridiculous that someone passionate and ready to lead like Owen gets sidelined over something like this. The constitution should reflect the modern, multicultural Australia we actually live in. Props to him for handling it with grace though—I hope he’s back in the game soon.
