Former Australian Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull has launched a scathing critique of Donald Trump, calling him a 'billionaire bully' and urging Australian politicians to stop appeasing the former U.S. president.
In a fiery speech at the National Press Club, Turnbull mocked Trump with an impersonation and called for a more assertive Australian stance in international relations. He emphasized the need for Australia to be as 'transactional' with the U.S. as the U.S. is with Australia. The comments come amid concerns over potential U.S. tariffs and how current Prime Minister Anthony Albanese will navigate the economic and diplomatic fallout.
Turnbull's remarks have reignited debate over Australia's foreign policy approach to a possible second Trump presidency.

Typical Turnbull—always quick to take shots at Trump to score points with the media. It’s funny how he talks about standing tall and being transactional, yet he was the one constantly trying to cozy up to China when he was in office. Trump may be blunt, but at least he puts his country first, and Australia should be smart enough to work with that, not throw tantrums over his personality. Turnbull’s impersonations and name-calling just make him look petty, not principled. Instead of worrying about Trump, maybe Aussie leaders should focus on strengthening the alliance and securing solid trade deals. The U.S. is still our most important ally, whether Trump is in office or not.

Turnbull whining about Trump just sounds like more establishment noise—how about less government posturing and more focus on keeping Aussies (and Americans) free to run their own lives? If both countries stopped trying to micromanage each other and just stuck to voluntary trade, we’d all be better off.
