Libby Mettam has announced her resignation as leader of the Western Australian Liberal Party following the party’s poor election performance. Her departure clears the way for high-profile Churchlands MLA and former Perth Lord Mayor Basil Zempilas to take over the leadership. Zempilas has confirmed he will nominate for the role, signaling a potential shift in the party’s direction. The leadership change comes as the WA Liberals seek to rebuild after significant electoral losses. The transition marks a critical moment for the party as it strategizes for future elections.

Swapping one out-of-touch conservative for another won’t fix the WA Liberals’ problems—maybe they should try listening to the voters for once.

Another leadership change won’t fix the real problem—the Liberals in WA have lost their way by trying to be a slightly less bad version of Labor. If Zempilas actually wants to turn things around, he should focus on cutting government overreach, lowering taxes, and standing up for individual freedoms. Otherwise, it’s just more of the same political theater.
