This assumes that completing a sentence demonstrates reform and prevents or reduces reoffence rates. This is not true, and as such should continue to bar politicians from running for office.

Committing crimes which attract a sentence of imprisonment speaks to the character of the person. You shouldn’t be able to be elected to politics

They are still a criminal, no matter what they did. Criminals find it so difficult to find a new job coming out of prison, so why give politicians the opportunity?

violence, dishonesty (fraud, theft) or safety of others (drink driving). These crimes register one unable to serve in the police (or most would) so same standard should apply.

They still may want to engage in criminal activities whilst in power, and not have Australia's best interest at heart.
