How would you explain the emotional pull of being someone 'in the know' versus someone out of the loop?

I think when we know we're in 'in the know' we feel challenged by those out of the loop. Them being out of the loop contradicts the knowledge you have, innately pulling us in to try and disprove them so they can be 'in the know' as well.
