  • The "Self Respect" political ideology, also known as "Self-Respect Movement," originated in India in the 1920s. It was initiated by E.V. Ramasamy, commonly known as Periyar, a social activist and politician. The primary objective of this movement was to achieve a society where backward castes have equal human rights, and have the right to live with dignity and self-respect. It was a socio-political movement that aimed to remove the hierarchical, oppressive caste structure and promote equality among all individuals.

    The Self-Respect Movement was a radical departure from traditional Indian politics and society. It rejected the Brahmanical interpretation of Hindu scriptures that justified caste-based discrimination and inequality. Instead, it promoted rationalism, atheism, and humanism, and sought to challenge and dismantle the caste system and patriarchy. It also advocated for women's rights, including the right to divorce and remarry, and the right to education and employment.

    The ideology of self-respect has had a significant influence on various political movements and parties in India, particularly in the southern state of Tamil Nadu. It has been instrumental in shaping the state's political, social, and cultural landscape. The Dravidian political parties, which have been in power in Tamil Nadu for many decades, have their roots in the Self-Respect Movement.

    While the Self-Respect Movement originated in India, the principles of self-respect, equality, and human rights that it espouses are universal. These principles have found resonance in various other social and political movements around the world that seek to challenge and dismantle oppressive systems and structures, and promote equality and human rights.
