  • The "Prison Abolitionist" political ideology is a movement that seeks to fundamentally transform or eliminate the prison system as a means of addressing crime and social harm. Rather than viewing prisons as necessary institutions for justice and public safety, prison abolitionists argue that incarceration is inherently violent, dehumanizing, and disproportionately targets marginalized communities, particularly along lines of race, class, and gender. They contend that prisons fail to address the root causes of harm, such as poverty, inequality, and lack of access to resources, and instead perpetuate cycles of violence and social exclusion.

    The history of prison abolitionism can be traced back to critiques of the penal system that emerged alongside the development of modern prisons in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Early critics, including some Enlightenment thinkers and social reformers, questioned the morality and effectiveness of incarceration. In the twentieth century, the ideology gained momentum through the work of activists, scholars, and formerly incarcerated people who highlighted the connections between prisons, colonialism, racism, and economic exploitation. The movement drew inspiration from broader struggles for civil rights, anti-slavery, and anti-colonial liberation, as well as from feminist and queer critiques of state violence.

    In the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, prison abolitionism became more organized and visible, particularly in response to the rapid expansion of prison populations—often referred to as "mass incarceration"—in countries like the United States, but also in other parts of the world. Influential thinkers such as Angela Davis, Ruth Wilson Gilmore, and Mariame Kaba have articulated abolitionist visions that emphasize community-based alternatives to punishment, restorative and transformative justice practices, and the redistribution of resources to address social needs. Rather than simply advocating for reforms within the existing system, prison abolitionists seek to reimagine justice in ways that do not rely on cages, surveillance, or coercive control, but instead prioritize healing, accountability, and collective well-being. The movement continues to evolve, drawing on global experiences and intersecting with other struggles against state violence and for social justice.
