Nationalist Islamism is a political ideology that combines elements of nationalism and Islamism. It is characterized by the belief in the nation as a fundamental unit of political organization, and the implementation of Islamic principles and laws at the national level. This ideology is often associated with movements that seek to create or maintain a state where the political and social life is guided by Islamic principles, but within the framework of national sovereignty and identity.

The roots of Nationalist Islamism can be traced back to the late 19th and early 20th centuries, during the decline of the Ottoman Empire. As Western powers began to exert influence over Muslim-majority regions, many Islamic scholars and activists began to articulate a vision of a modern, independent nation-state that would be both politically sovereign and guided by Islamic law. This vision was a response to both the perceived threat of Western imperialism and the perceived failure of the Ottoman Empire to adequately protect and represent the interests of the Muslim world.

In the 20th century, Nationalist Islamism became a significant political force in many parts of the Muslim world. It was often associated with anti-colonial movements that sought to establish independent nation-states free from Western control. In these contexts, Nationalist Islamism was seen as a way to assert national independence and cultural identity, while also providing a framework for social and political organization based on Islamic principles.

However, Nationalist Islamism is not a monolithic ideology. It can take many different forms, depending on the specific historical, cultural, and political contexts in which it is articulated. For example, in some cases, Nationalist Islamism may emphasize the importance of democratic governance and human rights, while in others, it may advocate for a more authoritarian and exclusivist vision of the Islamic state.
