Australians should be given the right to free speech. With our current "freedom of expression" hate speech should be included and protected under this freedom. All speech should be protected; what is it the governments right to determine what you've said is a criminal offense?
Because your speech has offended one particular group, does not mean you should be penalised for what you've said.
