Once the baby arrives all mothers are doing the same job – staying at home and looking after their new-born babies. nBy calling paid parental leave a ‘workplace entitlement’, what the major parties are basically saying is ‘women who have chosen to stay at home are not working, they are unemployed’. Family First rejects that. These mothers are not ‘unemployed’, they are professional mothers and carers. They are career mothers. To achieve good social and economic policy, we must first emphasize the equity of ensuring all new mothers are treated the same. Once that is established, we can move onto the next important challenge – responsible fiscal policy ie ‘how much to give them’.Source
