We know that the radioactivity of nuclear waste can be completely shielded once a lead, concrete, or water based lining is created. A facility can be created that will have no harm to the surrounding environment. Fears over nuclear waste are on a large part, are due to misleading claims and popular culture.
If investment into breeder reactors were created, we could potentially use up to 72% of the uranium cells for creating energy, compared to only using around 2% currently. This would exponentially decrease the amount of wastage for nuclear plants. This also means that nuclear waste can be re-used to maximise the use of their power, effectively creating a renewable energy source.
Fears over nuclear waste developed since the 1960s when leaders of anti-nuclear campaigns made claims that terrorists could steal waste and use it for nuclear bombs; other claims were that the waste could leak and cause damaging effects to humans and the environment. Those claims were fabricated to induce public disapproval for nuclear development in the US.
