No, that is not what we as Australians should want, police, despite mistakes from the past, are necessary for an orderly and safe society. We need well-funded police departments in all aspects, including in their training and in the safety of police officers. Without them, there would be chaos, crimes (violent and non-violent) will be rampant on every corner of the country. And in that case, "unarmed community based responders" that are reserved for non-violent crimes won't be able to do anything.

No, I do not believe that The Federal Australian Government should not defund the Police. Police are an important part of Australian Society and enforce the purposes of laws and regulations upon society. If we defund the Police, Australia will become out of control and Young and adult crime rates would spike dramatically. Police control whether people can do whatever they desire or not and keep society in a productive and effective running state. There are many examples of how bad crime can become in Australia without the proper supervision of Australian Police and their impacts have been seen clearly.
No any system can be improved. People with guns in position of power especially, are harmful (example: Bloody Sunday Massacre)

Do armed criminals really care if social workers arrive on the scene when they are committing crimes? Maybe we should increase funding of social programmes, but not at the expense of police. Police are necessary to social safety and social cohesion and police officers need to be involved in the community more, in schools, for example.

For non violent calls, I do not mind. In general however, as crime is going up I believe that we need to increase police funding.
